About the Chronic Absenteeism Survey Topics

Panorama Education’s Data Science and Applied Research Team conducted an extensive study analyzing attendance data from over 7,000 schools and 11 million student records. The study revealed that factors within a school’s control—such as safety, climate, and student engagement—can influence a student’s likelihood of chronic absenteeism by up to 22%.

Measure and Address Absenteeism at a District or Student Level

 

Panorama offers two tools to gather feedback from students about chronic absenteeism:

1. Chronic Absenteeism Benchmark Survey Topics are designed to be administered twice a year to capture school- or district-wide data. This package includes nine scales that correlate with chronic absenteeism, such as School Safety and School Climate. Districts can select the topics most relevant to their context and needs.
2. Chronic Absenteeism Check-Ins Questions are designed to be administered in Panorama’s Check-ins tool throughout the year to gather real-time feedback from students for timely support and intervention The Check-ins questions ask students about the attendance support they may need, what led them to miss school, and more.

The Chronic Absenteeism Survey Topics include nine scales demonstrated to correlate with chronic absenteeism from the research-backed Panorama Student Survey, which is used by thousands of schools and millions of students every year. Dr. Hunter Gehlbach and Dr. Sam Moulton developed the survey topics based on modern principles of survey development and design.

The Chronic Absenteeism Check-ins questions ask students about the attendance support they may need. Panorama created these questions based on best practices in survey design and scholarly literature to help educators understand and address absenteeism throughout the school year.
